Why Raise Ducks
Ducks earn their spot on the homestead. Some folks raise them for tender, flavorful meat, others for a steady supply of rich, large eggs, and plenty do both. They forage for bugs and greens, they're hardy across climates, and they bring a lot of personality to the yard. Whether you're starting a backyard flock or expanding a small farm, there's a duck breed that fits the plan.
Choosing a Breed for Meat or Eggs
For meat, Pekins are the most popular duck around, growing into large birds with tender, mild meat and a generous breast. Muscovies offer lean, richly flavored meat, and both Black and White Muscovy drakes grow into big, hearty birds. For eggs, Khaki Campbells lead the way with 165 to 300 eggs a year, and Silver Appleyards follow with up to 265, plus a beautiful coat and a rare heritage bloodline. Muscovy and Pekin hens lay too, so a mixed flock can bring you both meat and eggs.
Breed Temperaments
Every breed we hatch is friendly, which makes them a great match for families and first-time duck keepers. Pekins are tame and docile, and they like to chat, especially at feeding time. Muscovies are calm and quiet, communicating with soft coos and hisses, and they often become quite tame when raised from ducklings. Khaki Campbells are active, curious little foragers, and Silver Appleyards are docile, easygoing, and comfortable in a flock. Ducklings that grow up together tend to settle in as a happy, mixed group.

Why Choose Shirlock Acres?

NPIP-Certified Hatchery
From the moment a duckling hatches at Shirlock Acres, its health is our top priority. Because we’re an NPIP-certified hatchery, every bird is carefully monitored and tested to ensure its illness-free. When your ducklings arrive, they’ll be bright-eyed, energetic, and ready to thrive in your flock.

Nearly 20 Years of Experience
In 2007, a few ducks in the Shirk family’s backyard sparked a passion that soon grew beyond our fence line. Today, Shirlock Acres ships ducklings across the country, but our heart is still rooted in family care. Roger and Derek Shirk continue to raise every bird with the same honesty and attention they’ve always given their own. Curious how it all began? You’ll find the full story on our About Us page.

State-of-the-Art Hatchery
From the moment they hatch, our ducklings are raised in a safe, well-kept environment where every detail is watched over with care. That attention ensures the birds you receive are healthy, thriving, and eager to settle into their new home.
