Our White Ducks

When you picture a duck, you most likely picture a sleek Pekin duck with bright white feathers and an orange bill. At Shirlock Acres, we offer two kinds of white ducks, the popular Pekin ducks, and the White Muscovy Duck. Both ducks have primarily white feathers. The Muscovy duck has a large frame with broad chest and wings, and their most outstanding feature is the bright red caruncles around the eyes and the bill.

Meat & Egg Production

Pekin ducks are classic white ducks for meat. They grow quickly and have a mild flavor that most people like. Pekin hens are decent layers too, though they are not bred necessarily for egg production. Muscovy ducks are heavier and are great meat ducks. Their meat is dark and more lean, closer to mild red meat than the typical duck. They lay fewer eggs per year than good laying breeds, but the hens tend to go very broody and are fantastic mothers.

Temperament

The temperament of white ducks depends heavily on the specific breed. Pekin ducks are generally friendly and people tolerant, especially if handled from a young age. They tend to be on the noisier side, quacking noisily when they are excited or see you coming. White Muscovy ducks are a bit more quiet, hissing and making low trilling sounds instead of quacking. They can be quite independent and wary of strangers, though they can become bonded with their owners, when raised from ducklings.

  • White Muscovy Ducks

I was skeptical that my six female Muscovies would survive a flight from Pennsylvania to San Diego, but I was surprised to see seven arrive as healthy as can be. They survived the 2,400-mile flight. I didn’t even have that much success last year when I ordered from a hatchery in my own state, and even then, I ended up with mostly drakes from the straight run. Thank you so much for offering sexed Muscovies and for the extra one shipped with my order!

  • White Muscovy Ducks

Bought in 2024 and the ducklings arrived in good health, only lost 1 total even within a few days. They grew very well over a couple months with no leg issues. I am buying again in 2025!

White Ducks FAQs

Yes, especially Pekins. They’re hardy, grow quickly, and are typically friendly and easygoing when handled from a young age.

Noise level comes down to breed, not feather color. Pekin hens are known for being quite loud, with that classic sharp “quack!” you can hear across the yard. White Muscovies are the opposite—very quiet, communicating mostly with soft hisses and trills—making them a great choice if you have close neighbors.

White feathers give a much cleaner-looking carcass because they don’t leave dark pinfeather dots on the skin. Dark-feathered ducks, by contrast, can show little colored specks after plucking. That’s why most commercial meat strains (like Pekin) and many Muscovy meat lines are bred to be white or mostly white.

They do show dirt more, but ducks are pretty good at keeping themselves tidy if they have water to bathe in and you stay on top of mud. Good drainage, dry bedding, and rotating their yard or tossing down fresh straw all make a big difference.

From the moment a duckling hatches at Shirlock Acres, its health is our top priority. Because we’re an NPIP-certified hatchery, every bird is carefully monitored and tested to ensure its illness-free. When your ducklings arrive, they’ll be bright-eyed, energetic, and ready to thrive in your flock.

In 2007, a few ducks in the Shirk family’s backyard sparked a passion that soon grew beyond our fence line. Today, Shirlock Acres ships ducklings across the country, but our heart is still rooted in family care. Roger and Derek Shirk continue to raise every bird with the same honesty and attention they’ve always given their own. Curious how it all began? You’ll find the full story on our About Us page.
