Male Muscovy ducks, also known as drakes, do not have a permanent mating partner; they have seasonal mates. Muscovy ducks like to mate with other Muscovy ducks, but they can mate with other ducks if there is no female Muscovy.

Temperament

White male drakes are typically placid with humans, strong foragers, and good yard presence. When they hit puberty, they start making a hissing sound. During the breeding season, they can become territorial with other ducks, so maintaining balanced ratios and space is essential. Outside of this window, they’re calm, observant, and easy to keep.

Meat

Muscovy meat is darker and leaner than Pekin, with a profile closer to that of mild beef or veal, characterized by a firm texture and large breasts and thighs.

White Male Muscovy Duck FAQs

Mature white male Muscovy drakes typically reach about 10–15 lbs with a broad, heavy body and large breast and thigh muscles. They’re noticeably bigger and stockier than most egg‑type duck breeds.

White male Muscovy drakes are usually calm and placid with people when handled regularly. They’re observant and steady, but during breeding season, they can act territorial toward other ducks, so good space and stocking density are important.

If your main goal is meat production, a group of males works well and keeps eggs and broody behavior to a minimum. If you also want Muscovy duck eggs or your own breeding flock, you’ll need to add female Muscovy ducks and manage your male‑to‑female ratio.

The Bill Treatment option is helpful if you’re raising a larger group or keeping birds in closer quarters, where pecking could become an issue.

For personal use, many homesteaders start with 5–15 drakes for the freezer. For small‑scale sales or a family plus friends, 25–50 is common. Our quantity discounts start at 30, so if you’re planning a larger meat project, that’s a good breakpoint to target.

Pros
Cons

Premium meat: 98% lean, mild, and sells at higher prices.

Egg output is decent, but not in “egg machine” territory.

Good dual-purpose birds: solid meat plus 120–200 large, nutritious eggs/year.

Red caruncles and hissing can seem odd or intimidating to some.

Calm, friendly, rarely aggressive; great for families and mixed flocks.

Strong broody instinct can slow egg production if you don’t want constant hatching.

Super quiet: no quacking, just soft coos/hisses.

Big bodies = more feed and space than light laying breeds.
